Onset of symptoms

Ear infections

1. may begin in puppyhood and can become recurrent throughout life

Probability Of Onset:

1. recurrent ear infection risk may be high because long floppy ears create a warm moist environment

Epilepsy

1. episodes commonly begin from around 6 months and may occur between 6 months and 6 years
2. some text indicates first onset may often be between 18 months and 5 years

Probability Of Onset:

1. the breed is described as commonly susceptible and at higher risk than some dogs
2. one provided text indicates prevalence of 1.37%

Intervertebral Disk Disease

1. degeneration in chondrodystrophic dogs may begin between 2 months and 2 years
2. clinical episodes are often noted in young to middle-aged dogs around 3-6 years

Probability Of Onset:

1. long body , short legs and chondrodystrophic predisposition may increase risk and the condition is described as prevalent

Cherry eye and glaucoma

1. cherry eye usually starts before 1 year or under 2 years of age
2. glaucoma may develop in middle age around 3-7 years

Probability Of Onset:

1. eye issues are recognized breed predispositions and recurrence after cherry eye surgery may be high

Obesity

1. may begin from 6-12 months if calorie intake is excessive and remains a lifelong risk

Probability Of Onset:

1. risk may be very high because the breed is food-motivated and prone to weight gain

Reasons

Ear infections

1. the text indicates this is mainly a structural ventilation and moisture problem rather than a chemical lack
2. disrupted ear canal pH and microbiome may contribute

Intervertebral Disk Disease:

1. the text indicates this is a biomechanical disc disorder and not primarily a nutritional lack
2. loss of water-retaining disc components may occur

Epilepsy

1. the text indicates abnormal electrical activity and neurotransmitter imbalance may be involved rather than a daily deficiency

1. the text indicates these are structural disorders rather than chemical deficiencies

Obesity

  1. 1. the text indicates excess calories and insufficient exercise are more relevant than lack of a chemical

Normally Treament Methods

Ear infections:

  1. 1. ear cleaning and careful drying may be helpful
    2. ear swab cytology , otoscopic examination and medicated topical therapy may be used
    3. chronic salvage ear surgery is not recommended unless end-stage disease persists after appropriate medical management

Epilepsy:

  1. 1. diagnosis may involve excluding other causes with blood testing and sometimes advanced testing
    2. lifelong anticonvulsant medication may be needed and treatment of a primary cause may help secondary epilepsy

Intervertebral Disk Disease:

  1. 1. neurologic exam and cross-sectional imaging may help diagnosis
    2. strict confinement , pain relief and muscle relaxers may help mild cases
    3. acute progressive severe compressive injuries may be best managed with surgery

Cherry eye and glaucoma:

  1. 1. surgical correction or gland repositioning may be used for cherry eye
    2. emergency pressure-lowering care and ongoing medication may be needed for glaucoma
    3. gland removal is not recommended because dry eye risk may increase

Obesity:

  1. 1. strict calorie control , measured meals , lower-calorie diet and regular exercise may be helpful
    2. jumping and excessive climbing may be limited to help protect the back. Ask professional vets for detailed information.
