Ear Infections, Intervertebral Disk Disease, Eye diseases including glaucoma and ectropion, Gastric dilatation and volvulus, Skin fold dermatitis and atopic dermatitis

Symptoms

1. head shaking and ear scratching may occur
2. brown waxy or purulent discharge , foul odour , swelling and pain may develop

1. pain , reluctance to jump or climb stairs , hunched back and trembling may occur
2. weak legs , knuckling , paralysis and loss of bladder control may develop

1. redness , discharge , conjunctival exposure and dry irritated eyes may occur
2. glaucoma may cause pain , cloudy eye , vision loss or blindness

1. non-productive retching , distended abdomen , restlessness and drooling may occur
2. weakness , shock and collapse may develop rapidly

1. persistent itching , licking , chewing , reddened skin and hair loss may occur
2. moist malodorous folds , secondary yeast or bacterial infection and recurrent ear problems may develop

Onset of symptoms

Ear Infections

1. onset may begin in puppyhood and may be acute or chronic recurrent

Probability Of Onset:

1. the breed may have a markedly increased risk
2. one breed summary reports a 5.87-fold increased risk of otitis externa compared with mixed breeds

Intervertebral Disk Disease

1. chondrodystrophic disk degeneration may begin between 2 months and 2 years of age
2. breed-specific reports indicate disc extrusion may occur at an older average age around 7.3 years in Basset Hounds

Probability Of Onset:

1. risk is increased because the breed is chondrodystrophic with a long back and short legs
2. this is described as high risk

Eye diseases including glaucoma and ectropion

1. ectropion may be present from a young age due to conformation
2. cherry eye may first appear under 1 to 2 years of age
3. glaucoma may present later and increase with age , with average presentation around 6.33 years in one cited breed summary

Probability Of Onset:

1. eye disease risk is increased in the breed
2. glaucoma prevalence was reported up to 5.44 percent in one North American analysis and pectinate ligament dysplasia affected 38.4 percent of studied Basset Hounds

Gastric dilatation and volvulus

1. diagnosis may first occur on average around 5 years and can occur suddenly

Probability Of Onset:

1. the breed is consistently described as high risk
2. prevalence was reported at 4.6 percent in one UK study and relative risk may be markedly above average

Skin fold dermatitis and atopic dermatitis

1. atopic signs often may begin between 1 and 3 years of age
2. primary seborrhoea signs may appear early and progress with age

Probability Of Onset:

1. skin fold dermatitis risk is high due to folds and loose skin
2. one source reports odds ratio 10.70 for skin fold dermatitis and atopy risk more than twice average

Reasons

Ear Infections

1. this is mainly a conformation , moisture , ventilation problem rather than a direct chemical deficiency

Eye diseases including glaucoma and ectropion:

1. these are structural or fluid-drainage disorders and not described as chemical deficiency states

Eye diseases including glaucoma and ectropion:

1. these are structural or fluid-drainage disorders and not described as chemical deficiency states

Intervertebral Disk Disease

1. this is linked to chondrodystrophy and degenerative disc change rather than a daily chemical lack

Gastric dilatation and volvulus

1. this is a mechanical emergency and not a chemical deficiency

Skin fold dermatitis and atopic dermatitis

  1. 1. the content suggests the skin barrier may have impaired ceramides and essential fatty acids causing reduced barrier protection

Normally Treament Methods

Ear Infections:

  1. 1. otoscopic examination , ear cytology and culture may help identify causes
    2. regular cleaning , drying , hair removal for ventilation and topical or oral treatment may be helpful
    3. surgical salvage procedures are not recommended unless chronic end-stage disease persists after appropriate medical care

Intervertebral Disk Disease:

  1. 1. neurologic examination and CT , MRI or myelography may help assess the lesion
    2. strict confinement , pain control and muscle relaxants may help mild cases
    3. acute progressive severe compressive disease may be best managed with surgery

Eye diseases including glaucoma and ectropion:

  1. 1. complete ophthalmic examination and gonioscopy may be needed
    2. lubricating care or corrective surgery may help ectropion
    3. glaucoma may need lifelong pressure-lowering management and emergency care when acute

Gastric dilatation and volvulus:

  1. 1. this is a severe emergency and immediate stabilization and surgery may be required
    2. prophylactic gastropexy can, might be considered in high-risk dogs
    3. delaying treatment is not recommended

Skin fold dermatitis and atopic dermatitis:

  1. 1. daily cleaning and drying of folds may help
    2. bathing , allergen reduction , anti-itch medications and allergen-specific immunotherapy may be helpful for atopy. Ask professional vets for detailed information.
