Traditionally given as gifts to brides and associated with luck and happiness in Thailand , Korats were imported to the United States in 1959 and later strengthened in U.S. breeding lines. They were also described in ancient Thai writings and later seen in England in the late 1800s.

1. Cysts may cause no signs at first
2. Progressive decline in renal function and eventual chronic kidney disease may occur and kidneys may feel enlarged on palpation

1. The supplied text only states these are storage diseases that affect the nervous system and does not provide further symptom detail

Onset of symptoms

Diabetes mellitus

1. Most commonly diagnosed in middle-aged to senior cats and risk increases with age and obesity
2. Cornell indicates diabetes may develop during a cat’s lifetime and older cats are commonly affected

Probability Of Onset:

1. General cat lifetime diagnosis is estimated at 1:100 to 1:500 and obesity may raise risk up to 4 times
2. The Korat itself was not identified as specifically predisposed in the supplied source text

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

1. Onset timing was not specifically stated in the supplied text and early stages may not require treatment for years

Probability Of Onset:

1. HCM is common and may affect up to 15% of all cats according to the supplied NC State text

Periodontal disease

1. Great majority of dogs and cats over 3 years may have a degree of disease and the majority of cats over 2 years of age may be affected
2. Gingivitis is the earliest sign and periodontitis usually occurs after years of plaque accumulation

Probability Of Onset:

1. It is probably the most common disease seen in small animal practice and the majority of cats over 2 to 3 years may have disease warranting intervention

Polycystic kidney disease

1. Onset timing was not specified in the supplied text

Probability Of Onset:

1. Probability for Korats was not provided and Merck specifically identifies Persian , Persian-cross and domestic longhair cats rather than Korats

Gangliosidosis GM1 and GM2

1. low prevalence in  responsible breeders.

Normally Treament Methods

Diabetes mellitus:

  1. 1. The text indicates that insulin therapy and low-carbohydrate diet may help manage diabetes
    2. Weight control , monitoring , blood glucose curves and fructosamine testing may be used
    3. Oral SGLT2 inhibitors may be used in some newly diagnosed otherwise healthy cats

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy:

  1. 1. The guidance says echocardiography may be used for diagnosis and monitoring
    2. Early stages may not need treatment for years
    3. Cats with severe atrial enlargement may take clopidogrel and heart failure may be managed with medications including furosemide , ACE-inhibitors and pimobendan

Periodontal disease

  1. 1. The text indicates that scale and polish , root surface debridement , home dental care and extraction or surgery may help depending on severity
    2. Human oral care products are not recommended
    3. Regular examinations may be important

Polycystic kidney disease:

  1. 1. The text indicates that diagnosis may rely on physical examination and radiographic or ultrasonographic findings and care may focus on monitoring renal function decline

Gangliosidosis GM1 and GM2:

  1. 1. Purina indicates DNA testing may identify whether a cat has the potential to be affected. Ask professional vets for detailed information.
